State index: 1.6.88

Alexander Tamanyan, Artashes Mamijanyan
The complex is located at 105 Teryan Street. It
occupies the northwestern part of the Student Quarter, located at the foot of
the Kanaker plateau.
Yerevan Polytechnic Institute - YPI (unofficial name –
“Polytechnic”, in 1933-1991 - named after Karl Marx) was created on March 1,
1933, by merging the Construction (Engineering and Technical) and Chemical
Technology Institutes of the Armenian SSR.
The location for the complex was determined by the
Yerevan master plan drawn up in 1924 (architect Alexander Tamanyan).
Construction began in 1926 with the erection of the
chemistry faculty (architect Alexander Tamanyan). In 1929, the administrative
building was constructed (architect Alexander Tamanyan). Among the first
buildings were also former student dormitories (1930s), some of which were
later demolished and new buildings were constructed in their place. In
1953-1963, the main building of the institute was built (architect Artashes
Mamijanyan), in the late 1960s - the scientific research building (architect
Artashes Mamijanyan), in 1971 - the radio electronics building. In the 1980s,
the library and sports sectors were built. The architects of other buildings
include Samvel Safaryan, Tiran Marutyan, Mikael Mazmanyan, Gevorg Kochar,
Ardvard Kanayan, Rafael Israelyan, and others. Artashes Mamijanyan worked on
the master plan of the complex.
As industry progressed in Armenia, the institute
expanded, and new faculties were created. In 1980-1985, it reached its peak of
development, having about 25,000 students and more than 60 specialties,
becoming the largest higher technical educational institution in Armenia and
one of the leading engineering schools in the USSR.
It has branches in Gyumri and Vanadzor (1959). In
1972, a branch of the institute's radio electronics faculty was opened in
Dilijan.
On November 29, 1991, by decree of the President of
the Republic of Armenia, Yerevan Polytechnic Institute was reorganized and
renamed as “State Engineering University of Armenia” SNCO, which on November
13, 2014, was renamed to “National Polytechnic University of Armenia”
Foundation. It cooperates with international educational and scientific centers
of similar profile.
Based on the architectural-construction,
engineering-construction, and transport faculties of Yerevan Polytechnic
Institute, Yerevan Architectural and Construction Institute was established in
1989. From 2000 to 2014, it operated as "Yerevan State University of
Architecture and Construction" SNCO. On January 23, 2014, by the decision
of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, it was reorganized into the
“National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia” Foundation.
It has 5 faculties: architecture, industrial and civil
construction, construction technology, hydraulic engineering and urban economy,
transport construction. It cooperates with a number of countries, participating
in numerous exchange and professional development programs for students and
faculty.
