CENTRAL COVERED MARKET (CLOSED MARKET)

1952

State index: 1.6.152

Architect: Grigor Aghababyan
Constructor: H. Arakelyan

It is located on Mesrop Mashtots Avenue. It was built in 1952 by commission of the Ministry of Trade of the Armenian SSR.

Before renovation, the market building was a three-tiered hall with a pronounced central nave. The main hall, measuring 70 m in length and 32 m in width, is covered by 19 reinforced concrete arches, spaced at intervals of 4 meters. The arches are artistically designed with rhythmically diminishing smaller arches, which give the structure lightness and enrich the interior space. The side naves are two-story, accessed by wide staircases. The main façade is designed with a monumental arched entrance, decorated with a metal stained-glass composition, a movable door, and national ornamental motifs.

Inside the market there was a small pool with a fountain, where there was a tradition of tossing coins.

The total area is 2,300 m². The building is constructed of reinforced concrete and tuff. In 2012–2013, it was renovated, and the interior was transformed. Since 2014, it has operated as the “Yerevan City” shopping center.
