1911
State index: 1.6.203.1
The building is located in the block between Tigran Mets Avenue and Deghatan Street, at 9 M. Mkrtchyan Street.
In 1903, Petros Esapyan (Esapov) built a fruit canning and puree factory,
which was the first of its kind in the Transcaucasus. The factory’s products
were exported to Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Finland, Tiflis, Baku, and Batumi.
Shortly after its foundation, the factory gained great fame. Esapyan received
his first award - a gold medal and an honorary diploma - in 1905 at an
agricultural exhibition in Belgium. In 1907, the canning factory received two
awards - the Grand Prix in London and a gold medal at the international
exhibition in Vienna.
The building, constructed in 1911, is two-storied with a basement. It has
an Г-shaped plan, with a double-row arrangement of
rooms oriented towards the street (where two cantilevered balconies are
located) and towards the courtyard (where the halls are). At one end of the
building is the entrance, at the other - a passageway. The plane of the main
facade is divided by lateral vertical articulations, ending in a stepped huge
parapet. The frames of the entrances and windows, as well as the walls under
the windows, have original geometric ornaments, while the cornice, the space
between the modillions, and the latticed balconies are adorned with floral
bas-reliefs. The load-bearing walls are made of mixed stones laid in mortar.
The ceilings are flat and wooden. The roof is sloped. The main facade and
balconies are made of black tuff. The halls are wooden.
After the Sovietization of Armenia, the factory was nationalized and
operated until 1929.
