THE PRESIDENT RESIDENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA (Formerly: PRESIDENCY BUILDING OF THE SUPREME COUNCIL OF THE ARMENIAN SSR)
1958
State index: 1.6.162
Architect: Mark Grigoryan
The
building is located at 26 Marshal Baghramyan Avenue. It is separated from the
street by a fence and an entrance fence (were installed during the years of RA
independence).
The main building was designed in 1951 as the house of the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR, later it was the building of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR. In 1960 the author of the project, Mark Grigoryan, was awarded with the certificate of the Supreme Council of the ASSR.
It is a rectangular structure in plan. Two-storey, not high and narrow, the main façade faces the avenue. The interior of the area is extended by lateral one-storey open halls, which have 12 columns of the Ionic order and remind of early medieval Armenian architectural structures (particularly, the Basilica of Yereruyk). The building has a 2 m high basalt made wall base. The main façade is solved with large monumental forms. Its arcaded entrance ends with a triangular fronton supported by capitals (and columns) of the Classical order. In the middle of the building is located arched reception hall (great hall), which is lit by semicircular windows on both sides of the base of the building. It stands out for the combination of classical and national architectural forms. It is built of light yellowish felsite and basalt, and it stands out among the background of surrounding construction and greenery.
In
1987 according to the new project designed in the “Hayard Project” institute,
two three-storey buildings with 10 m in width and 6 m in length were added on
both sides of the main building.
Until the 1992-2018 of May, the building served as the residence of the President of the RA, then for a short time it was the residence of the Prime Minister of the RA. Since the March of the 2019 it has again become the seat of the RA President. In 2009-2010 a new, four-storey administrative building was built at the back of the building, according to the project of the architect Narek Sargsyan.
In April of 2019, by the decision of the Yerevan’s Council of Elders, the residence of the President of the RA was named “House of the Republic”. The works of prominent Armenian artists Hovhannes Aivazovsky, Panos Terlemezyan, Martiros Saryan, Gevorg Bashinjaghyan, Hakob Hakobyan and others are exhibited in different halls of the President’s residence. At the back of the area are installed the statues of Tigran II the Great Armenian King (2000, marble, sculptor։ Levon Tokmajyan) and Noaհ (2000, marble, basalt, sculptor։ Levon Tokmajyan), which were moved here from the front of the main building in 2011.
