The Academy (former Agricultural Institute, currently Armenian National Agrarian University) is located in the Victor Hambardzumyan Park, between Abovyan and Teryan Streets, and was founded in 1930 based on the Faculty of Agriculture of Yerevan State University. The construction of the main building was implemented in two stages: first in 1932-1940 were constructed the separate parts of the building, while during 1953-1956 unfinished parts were built. In 1976 on the northern side of the main building, a new building programmed by N. Trofimov (Moscow) was built, connected to the first building by Teryan Street through the second-floor corridor.
The main building is a large structure (size:165 x 43 m). It has a solution typical of university buildings (classrooms, offices, laboratories, etc.). The fronts are designed by the line of wall columns equal to the height of the building, and the capitals of the columns are designed by Armenian national ornaments. It is built with the combination of rough-hew and smooth basalt materials. As a result of the unification of Armenian agricultural and veterinary medicine and animal husbandry institutions the Armenian Agricultural Academy was established in 1994 and was renamed as the State Agrarian University of Armenia in 2005 and afterwards the National Agrarian University of Armenia in 2012.
In
1985, in front of the main southern facade of the Academy building was
constructed a memorial made of red smooth tuff dedicated to the martyrs of
World War II having a connection with the university (State Index, 1.6.2.1,
Architect, Aslan Mkhitaryan). At the core of the character is a highly stylized
image of a spike symbolizing life.
