Academy of Sciences
The
complex of the buildings of the Presidency of the National Academy of Sciences
of the Republic of Armenia and research institutes are located at 24 Marshal
Baghramyan Avenue.
In
1943 the Armenian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the United Soviet
Socialist Republic (USSR) was reorganized into the Armenian Soviet Socialist
Republic Academy of Sciences. During 1940-1950s its presidency was staffed on
Abovyan Street. In 1948 began the construction of the complex on Baghramyan
Street, which was completed in 1958. In the 1970s related to the expansion of
the institutions included in the academy complex, two multistorey buildings
(Institutes of art, history, oriental studies, and the library) were built in
the free zones behind the main building.
The
presidency building is placed in the center of the complex, where the academy's
library was initially located. Parallel to it, two identical lateral buildings
of the Institutes of Mathematics, Mechanics, and Geology were built (architect
Makabe Manuelyan also participated in the projection process). In the lobby of
the presidency building, on the first floor are depicted the frescoes of
“Mesrop Mashtots” and “Movses Khorenatsi” (1958, artist: Van Khachatur), and in
the conference hall - plaster sculptures of famous Armenian scientists are
installed (1958, sculptor: Ara Sargsyan).
The
intermediate space of the buildings is solved in the form of a garden with
fountains.
In
1992 the Academy of Sciences of the ASSR was renamed the National Academy of
Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
