1989 թ.
State indicator: 1.5.24
Sculptor: Sargis Baghdasaryan
Located on Khaghagh Don Street in the residential area
of the Erebuni administrative district.
The devastating earthquake in Spitak on December 7,
1988, caused massive destruction and thousands of human casualties. Civilized
humanity, international organizations, and many countries worldwide, including
Yugoslavia, rushed to help the Armenian people. A Yugoslav aircraft delivering
humanitarian aid crashed on the night of December 12, 1988, not far from the
landing site, southwest of Tsaghkunk village in Armavir region, near the Kasakh
bridge. All seven crew members of the aircraft perished. In 1989, the grateful
Armenian people erected monuments in memory of this tragedy both at the crash
site and in Yerevan. The monument in Tsaghkunk’ was built using the debris of
the crashed aircraft (architect Zhirayr Petrosyan). The fallen pilots were also
buried here.
The monument built on Tikhiy Don Street in Yerevan
(sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan) is installed on a platform made of polished gray
basalt and red granite, which is approached by steps. On the polished pedestal
stands a bronze sculpture resembling a tree in its composition, from the
central part of which a flock of birds takes flight, symbolizing the souls of
the deceased (seven birds with outstretched wings).
The memorial plaque is engraved with the names and surnames of the Yugoslav pilots and the date of their death - 12.12.88.
The height of the monument is 5.80 meters.
