AVAN OBELISK

A small part of the central cemetery of Avan with an obelisk
(V-VI century) and several khachkar-tombstones remained on the left side of the
asphalted road.
The obelisk is one of the early medieval Armenian memorial
monuments, erected on a multi-level pedestal. It is octagonal, narrowing
upwards with no ornaments. It is made of
gray and reddish tuff. The total height is 4.4 m.
In 1959, works were carried out to strengthen the obelisk and improve the surroundings (author of the project: Yu. A. Tamanyan).
