ARMENIAN GAMPR MONUMENT

2018

Sculptor: Levon Tokmajyan

The statue of the Armenian Gampr is located in the Circular Park, at the intersection of Teryan and Moskovyan streets. It is a gift from the Armenian community of Amsterdam on the occasion of the 2800th anniversary of the founding of Yerevan. The sculpture is made of bronze (160 x 100 x 40 cm). The pedestal is inscribed in Armenian and English: FROM THE ARMENIAN COMMUNITY OF AMSTERDAM TO THE CITY OF YEREVAN ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2800TH ANNIVERSARY.

The sculpture was erected in honor of the “Gampr” (Wolf-killer) dog, which Armenians have bred in the Armenian Highlands for thousands of years, and which the International Cynological Union recognized in 2011. On February 10, it was recognized as the national, indigenous breed of Armenia.
