The complex sits on Tsitsernakaberd Hill, near the Armenian Genocide Memorial, at 1 Leningradyan Street.
It consists of two halls: a sports hall and a concert
hall. The first hall opened in 1983, and the second in October 1984.
Renovations took place from 1985 to 1987.
The complex's design makes it a unique architectural
structure. When needed, a rotating 1008-seat tribune connects the halls,
significantly expanding their usage possibilities.
In 1987, artists adorned the concert hall with the “Renaissance”
curtain-tapestry, created based on sketches by USSR People’s Artist Grigor
Khanjyan.
The structure won the USSR State Prize in 1987.
In 1999, officials named the complex after Karen
Demirchyan, a prominent Armenian party, state, and political figure. He served
as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of
Armenia (1974-1988), Chairman of the National Assembly of Armenia (1999), and
received the title of National Hero of Armenia.
Major renovations occurred in 2007-2008.
The sports hall and concert hall have hosted
world-renowned athletes, famous singers, and musicians. Numerous concerts and
performances by various music groups have taken place here.
On the main facade of the complex, above the entrance,
stands the large-scale “Renaissance” high relief (1984) by sculptor Ferdinand
Arakelyan. It covers a red tuff wall 60 meters long and 4.5 meters high.
In 2023, workers installed a monument to Karen
Demirchyan in front of the stairs leading to the complex (sculptor: Sargis
Babayan, architect: Levon Arakelyan).
