KANAKER MILITARY BARRACKS COMPLEX
End of the 19th century - beginning of the 20th century
State Index: 1.12.7
Located at 117-123 Zakaria Sarkavag Street.
Built
as the station for the 1st Poltava Regiment of the Kuban Cossack Army.
The
regiment was established in 1871 by the supreme order of Russian Emperor
Alexander II on August 1, 1870. The regiment's holiday was celebrated annually
on August 30, as the mobile church of the regiment, founded in 1882, was named
after Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263), a prominent figure in Russian history. On
this day in 1724, by order of Emperor Peter the Great, Alexander Nevsky’s
relics were transferred from Vladimir to St. Petersburg.
During
World War I, the regiment fought on the Caucasian front. After the October
Revolution, it returned to Kuban on November 20, 1917.
The
garrison buildings were constructed at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries in
the northeastern part of Kanaker village, in the garden area, using black tuff
stone. For the service members, the Holy Mother of God Russian Orthodox Church
of the 1st Poltava Regiment was built in 1913-1916 using orange, finely-cut
tuff.
The
people of Kanaker actively participated in the construction work.
During
the Soviet era, the garrison remained under Russian control. In the years of
the Third Republic, it became home to an Armenian regiment of the RA Ministry
of Defense.
