STATUE OF “VAHAGN VISHAPAKAGH” (“DRAGON SLAYER”)

1965

State index: 1.2.15

Architect: Rafael Israelyan, sculptor: Ara Harutyunyan

Vahagn was a prominent deity in the ancient Armenian pantheon, revered as the god of bravery, thunder, and war. He was one of the most powerful and beloved gods, symbolizing strength, courage, and victory. Vahagn earned the title "Dragon Slayer" because, according to tradition, he battled dragons that represented evil and darkness.

The monument dedicated to Vahagn is situated prominently along the Yerevan-Sevan highway, marking the northern entrance to Yerevan. It is set on a low basalt pedestal. The sculpture depicts Vahagn standing above the clouds, vanquishing a three-headed dragon during a storm. On the south-facing surface of the rock, Vahagn is portrayed in this dramatic pose. The upper part of the monument features a sculpture of a grape leaf, a symbol of Armenia. On the back of the monument, an inscription from Movses Khorenatsi’s "The Birth of Vahagn" is engraved.

The monument is constructed from smooth red tuff and stands 4 meters tall. Through this depiction, the creators aimed to represent the triumph of good over evil.
