MONUMENTS
THE SOUTHWESTERN ENTRANCE OF YEREVAN (“BUILDER EAGLE”)
1966
State index: 1.7.8
Architect: Rafael Israelyan
Sculptor: Ara Harutyunyan
The monument is located along the Yerevan-Etchmiadzin highway and was constructed in 1966. It was designed by architect Rafael Israelyan and sculptor Ara Harutyunyan. The monument features three large, parallel gables with triangular outlines, all connected by a central bronze sculpture of an eagle with outstretched wings.
The
eagle is depicted with a steady gaze and detailed wings. Its head is adorned
with a sun sculpture, and a grape leaf, a symbol of Armenia, is shown on its
chest. This grape leaf motif is also present on the “Vahagn the Dragon Slayer”
monument at the northern entrance to Yerevan, created by the same artists. The
eagle grasps construction tools— a straight wire and a hammer— in its claws,
symbolizing the strength and creative spirit of the Armenian people.
The
height of the monument is 15 meters.
