SCULPTURE “DANCE OF THE MOUNTAINEERS” (“MOUNTAIN DANCE”)
1984
State index: 1.6.207
Sculptor: Tigran Arzumanyan
The sculpture is located in the Arabkir administrative district of Yerevan, in Mergelyan park. In 1984-2024, it was located in the square adjacent to the “Dvin” hotel at 40 Paronyan Street. It was initially installed (when viewed from Paronyan Street) on the right side of the old hotel building (1979, architects: Felix Hakobyan, Ashot Aleksanyan, Eduard Safaryan, sculptor: Aramazd Shiraz, artist: Vladimir Atanyan, Armenian SSR State Prize: 1979), and after the fundamental reconstruction of the building, it was moved to the left side.
“Dance of the Mountaineers” is a group composition featuring six people
- four men and two women. They are sculpted in one row, holding hands, shoulder
to shoulder, with heads held high. Three of the dancers are depicted at the
moment of jumping. They are as strong as the Armenian mountains, determined,
sculpted proudly, their dance is victorious. The sculptural group is made of
copper, with clothes emphasized by sharp cuts.
In the 1990s, the “Dvin” hotel ceased to operate. A fence was built
around it, the sculptural group was forgotten, and the part below the waist
disappeared.
With the support of the hotel management, the author began the
restoration work of the statue in 2015, after which the four-ton copper-cast
sculptural group was reinstalled near the new building of the “Dvin” hotel.
The sculpture stands out for its high mastery of execution.
