“MILITARY CEMETERY” MEMORIAL

It
is located in the southeastern part of the city, in the central cemetery of
Yerevan. It occupies an area of 17.6x10.1 meters. During the Great Patriotic or
World War II (1941-1945), Armenians and soldiers of other nationalities and
officers who had died in Yerevanian military hospitals were buried here. Within
1980-1982 a military memorial complex was created, having taken already
existing graves as a basis.
The
complex is consisted of the memorial wall, the monument with sculptures of a two of soldiers, and the tombstones (26 rows, 10 at each)
on both sides of the basalt-paved road leading to the monument, on which are
written the names of the victims in Russian. As
building materials were used tuff, basalt and etc.
Armenian
heroes of the Soviet Union, prominent Armenian figures of the Soviet Army,
Armenian and foreign soldiers and officers are buried in this military
graveyard.

Manukyan (1916-1986), Hero of the USSR, colonel, archeologist Gedeon
Mikayelyan (1907-1985), Hero of the USSR, Lieutenant General Sargis
Martirosyan (1900-1984), Hero of the USSR, colonel Georgi Hakobyants
(1920-1976), Major General Nikolay Novitsky (in 1945 was reburied from the
Children’s Park), Aviation Major General Aram Sarkisyan (1922-1985),
Academician
of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Professor Ruben
Barseghyan (1933-2006), honored doctor of the Republic of Armenia,
Professor Gagik Mkhoyan (1950-2009) and others.
