MONUMENT TO TIGRAN THE GREAT
2000
Sculptor: Levon Tokmajyan
The
monument to Tigran II the Great (95-55 BC), a prominent ruler of the Artaxiad
dynasty of the Great Armenian Kingdom, is located at 26th Marshal Baghramyan
Street, within the courtyard of the President of the Republic of Armenia's
residence (formerly the building of the Supreme Council of the ASSR).
The
statue, made of marble, is set on a low, smooth basalt pedestal. It depicts
King Tigran seated on a throne, dressed in royal attire, and holding a dagger
in his right hand. The dimensions of the statue are 2.8 x 1.6 x 1.0 meters.
The
monument was installed in the courtyard of the residence in 2000. On May 2,
2011, Yerevan's chief architect, Narek Sargsyan, proposed relocating the statue
of Noah from the front to the rear of the presidential building. This was the
first monument of a mighty king to be erected in Yerevan; a second was
installed in 2004 and officially unveiled on November 18, 2005, in the
administrative district of Nor Nork, in the park named after Tigran Mets.
