State index: 1.6.129
Sculptor: Yervand Kochar
Architect: Stepan Kyurkchyan
Located in the Ring Park, at the intersection of Khanjyan and Vardanants Streets and Main Avenue. Dedicated to Vardan Mamikonyan, the leader of the 5th century Armenian liberation movement against Sassanid Persia and the commander of the Armenian forces in the Battle of Avarayr in 451. The unveiling took place on December 20, 1975.
In a square paved with tuff, on a finely cut pedestal made of pink Artik tuff, stands the copper forged statue of the mounted sparapet (commander-in-chief), seemingly suspended in air. The plastic solution is expressive with monumental styling, full of movement and tension. The complex, dynamic composition of the stone pedestal is in harmony with the overall spirit of the creation. The image of Vardan Mamikonyan displays courage and an unwavering will to sacrifice for the homeland.
The monument bears compositional and stylistic elements characteristic of the Italian Renaissance and 20th-century sculpture.
The total height is 17 meters. It plays a key role in the complex urban environment created by the intersections of the park and streets.
