MONUMENT TO THE KING ARGISHTI THE FIRST

The
monument is dedicated to Argishti I (reigned 786–764 BC), the powerful ruler of
the Van (Urartu) kingdom and founder of the city of Erebuni-Yerevan (782 BC).
It is located in the square near the Erebuni Museum, on a two-tiered basalt,
polished platform.
The
ceremonial opening of the monument took place on June 22, 2002. The sculpture
depicts the king driving a chariot harnessed to a pair of horses, emphasizing
his power and fighting spirit. The monument is made of black and orange tuff,
dimensions: 7 x 3 m and 4 x 1.5 m.
