VICTORY MONUMENT MEMORIAL COMPLEX
1950-1985
Located
on Azatutyun Avenue, within the territory of Victory Park.
The
memorial complex is dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War
(1941–1945).
It
was opened on November 29, 1950, on the 30th anniversary of the Sovietization
of Armenia. The project of the complex and the entire park was designed by
architect Rafael Israelyan. He also designed the monumental, sculpturally
decorated high pedestal intended for the Victory Monument.
In
1970, according to Rafael Israelyan’s design, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
with an eternal flame was also built. The soldier’s remains were brought from
the city of Mozdok, which was liberated during the Great Patriotic War by the
soldiers of the 89th Armenian Tamanyan Division, and were reburied in front of
the “Mother Armenia” monument.
In
1983–1985, in preparation for the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory, the
memorial complex was renovated (architects: Ashot Aleksanyan, Anahit
Navasardyan). The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was reconstructed and given a
more solemn appearance, and the Heroes’ Alley was created.
Ten years after
Rafael Israelyan’s death, in 1983, based on his sketches and according to the
design of his son, Areg Israelyan, the triumphal arch at the entrance to the
park from Azatutyun Avenue was constructed, decorated with unique bas-reliefs,
each different from the others.
