In the 1960s, water areas were created in the city's recreation areas to alleviate the hot and humid microclimate of Yerevan. The first of the planned artificial reservoirs was Swan Lake. It is located at the intersection of Tumanyan and Teryan streets, in the park surrounding the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. It was named so in honor of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's famous ballet "Swan Lake".
Swan Lake is graphically a smaller version of Lake Sevan, built of stone and concrete. The area is about 2,490 m², the capacity is 2,400 m³. During the construction, the surrounding area was landscaped (about 3,400 m²), willow trees were planted. Concrete paths (about 2700 m²) run around the lake and through the greenery. The lake has an island, which is connected to the path by a bridge. Since 2005, part of the lake has been transformed into an ice rink in winter.
