KHNKO APER NATIONAL CHILDREN’S LIBRARY BUILDING
1980
Architects: Levon Ghalumyan, Rouzan
Alaverdyan
The building is
located on Teryan Street.
The
planning structure of the building consists of four identical volumes (12 × 12
m) arranged around a square hall, each containing a reading room. The walls are
decorated with thematic murals dedicated to the history and culture of the
Armenian people (artist: Ruben Ghevondyan). There are also halls for music,
fairy tales, and events, decorated with carved wooden elements.
The
smoothly cut façades are distinguished by circular windows combined with groups
of rectangular windows arranged in a specific composition on the lower floors.
The
façade facing Teryan Street is notable for the carved wooden main entrance door
(1982, sculptor: Vladimir Petrosyan).
The
building’s bordered flat roof is used as an open-air recreational area.
The
building is constructed from light ochre-colored felsite. Marble has been used
in the interior finishes.
The
architects of the building, Levon Ghalumyan and Rouzan Alaverdyan, were awarded
the Komsomol Prize in 1981.
