HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
BUILDING OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY OF ARMENIA
Mid-1890s – Early 1910s
Formerly:
HAMBARDZUM SOGHOMONYAN BRANDY FACTORY
The
building is located on Melik-Adamyan Street.
Yerevan
entrepreneur Hambardzum Soghomonyan was from the well-known Tiflis-Armenian
Soghomonyan family, which had founded a wine and vodka factory in Tiflis in
1853. Hambardzum Soghomonyan established his cognac factory in the mid-1890s.
The factory produced cognac, wine, vodka, liqueurs, and fruit preserves, and in
terms of production volume was second only to the factories of Nikolai Shustov
and Davit Sarajyan.
As
production expanded, a building was commissioned in the early 1910s on
Doktorskaya Street (now Tumanyan Street) by the factory owner.
According
to 1915 records, it was a building faced with black polished tuff, containing a
cognac factory, offices, cellars, and a cooper’s workshop. The one- and
two-story structures were grouped around an inner courtyard.
After
the Sovietization of Armenia, the building was nationalized. For decades, it
functioned as a printing house.
By
decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the building was
relocated and reconstructed on Melik-Adamyan Street. Since 2001, it has housed
the central office of the Republican Party of Armenia. After relocation, a
third floor was added.
The
building is a distinctive example of industrial architecture from the late 19th
and early 20th centuries.
