RESIDENCE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE RA
1958
State index: 1.6.162
Architect: Mark Grigoryan
Formerly:
PRESIDENCY BUILDING OF THE
SUPREME COUNCIL OF THE ARMENIAN SSR
The
building is located on Marshal Baghramyan Avenue. It is separated from the
street by a fence and an entrance railing (put up during the years of RA
independence).
The
main building was designed in 1951 as the House of the Council of Ministers of
the Armenian SSR, later it was the building of the Presidium of the Supreme
Council of the Armenian SSR.
It
is a rectangular structure in plan. It is two-story, relatively low and with a narrow main
facade facing the avenue. The interior of the area is extended by lateral
one-story open halls, which have 12 columns of the Ionic order and are
reminiscent of early medieval Armenian architectural structures (in particular,
the Basilica of Yereruyk).
The
building has a 2 m high basalt base, the main
facade is solved with monumental large forms. Its arched porch ends with a
triangular pediment, which rests on the capitals (and columns) of the classical
order.
In
the middle of the building is the reception hall (large hall), which is
illuminated by semicircular windows on both sides of the base of the hall. It
stands out for its combination of classical and national architectural forms.
It is built of light yellowish felsite and basalt, stands out against the
background of the surrounding construction and landscaping.
1987
two three-story
buildings, 10 m wide and 6 m long, were added on both sides of the main
building.
In
2009-2010, a new, four-story administrative building was built in the back of
the building along the axis, designed by architect Narek Sargsyan.
From
1992 to 2018, the building served as the residence of the President of the
Republic of Armenia, then for a short time it was the residence of the Prime
Minister of the Republic of Armenia. Since March 2019, it has been the
residence of the President of the Republic of Armenia again.
By
decision of the Yerevan Council of Elders in April 2019, the residence of the
President of the Republic of Armenia was renamed the "House of the
Republic".
