PARTEV MARGARYAN RESEARCH CENTER FOR MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROTECTION
1931, 1936–1939
Located
at the intersection of Mesrop Mashtots Avenue and Arami Street.
By
a decision of the Government of the Armenian SSR, the “Institute for the
Protection of Motherhood and Childhood” was established in Yerevan in 1931. In
1937, it was renamed the “Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology,” and
in 1989 it became the “Research Center for Maternal and Child Health
Protection.” Among Yerevan residents, it is widely known as the “Margaryan
Hospital” or the “Margaryan Maternity Hospital.” The institution was named
first after Nadezhda Krupskaya and later after Honored Scientist and Professor
Partev Margaryan.
Construction
of the maternity hospital building originally began as the building of the
Council of People’s Commissars of the Armenian SSR. However, due to the
construction of Government House No. 1 on Lenin Square (now Republic Square),
the project was suspended by the author of the city’s master plan, architect
Alexander Tamanyan. Nevertheless, in 1932 the project was approved, and the
first floor of the hospital, designed for 100 beds, was completed, largely
determining the building’s external appearance. In 1935, construction of the
maternity hospital resumed on the already built socle floor, based on a design
by architect Mark Grigoryan.
The
building has a symmetrical composition. The paired side wings are united by a
semicircular volume that dominates the overall spatial composition. This
section features a projecting lower floor with a triple-arched main entrance
and a recessed pentagonal volume on the second and third floors in the form of
a rotunda. The entire structure is crowned with a cornice continuing along the
side wings. Separate auxiliary buildings were constructed on the courtyard
side. Sculptural compositions were attached to the wall facing Aram Street.
It
is one of the first large maternity hospitals in Yerevan.
