AXEL BAKUNTS RESIDENTIAL HOUSE
1927
State Index:
1.6.52
Architect: Nikoghayos Buniatyan
Located on Nalbandyan Street.
It is one of the earliest examples of Soviet Armenian residential architecture.
From 1927 to 1936, the prominent Armenian writer, philologist, and translator
Axel Bakunts (Alexander Stepani Tadevosyan, 1899–1937) lived in this house.
The building was originally a
single-story structure consisting of four apartments. Its main façade was
plastered, with architectural elements made of black tuff standing out—such as
the cornice and vertically arranged, rhythmically repeated quoins at the
corners. In 1939, preserving the design of the main façade, a second floor was
added, and later a third.
The ground floor is currently
occupied by shops.
In 1970, a sculptural memorial
dedicated to Axel Bakunts was installed near the building (orange tuff stone,
architect Oleg Shokarev, sculptor Eduard Aghayan). The inscription at its base
reads:
“HERE IN THIS YEREVAN HOUSE,
THE HEART OF AXEL BAKUNTS ONCE BEAT. DO YOU HEAR—THE APRICOT FLUTE IS
MURMURING, THE ALPINE VIOLET IS FRAGRANT, AND OLD MURO TELLS STORIES. LISTEN,
PASSERBY.”
A commemorative plaque
dedicated to Bakunts is also mounted on the building.
