THE GREAT BRIDGE OF HRAZDAN - KIEVYAN BRIDGE
1956
The
bridge was constructed over the Hrazdan River, replacing the old bridge, that
previously occupied the same location. It is an important urban planning
junction, which, being the continuation of the Kievyan Street, connects the city
center with Arabkir, Ajapnyak, Malatia-Sebastia administrative districts. It
was built according to the project of Grigor Aghababyan - a distinguished
artist and honored architect of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic
(ASSR), the chief architect of Yerevan (1950-1959), correspondent-member of the
Academy of Construction and Architecture of the ASSR. The constructors are S.
Hovnanyan, V. Pinajyan, S. Durgaryan, N. Slavinsky.
This
is one of the largest engineering structures in Yerevan, comprising a one-story
structure constructed with reinforced concrete. It spans a length of 364
meters, has a width of 26 meters, and reaches a height of 58.3 meters. The massive
handrails, installed for safety reasons, are crafted from cast iron.
The design allows for two-way traffic.
The
roadway underwent reconstruction in 1981, and repair works were carried out in
2005.
A magnificent view of the Hrazdan Gorge opens from the bridge.
