MONUMENTS
PEPO
1976
The monument dedicated to the main
character of the play "Pepo" by the great Armenian playwright Gabriel
Sundukyan is located in the English Park, in front of the Gabriel Sundukyan
National Academic Theater. It is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of
Sundukyan's birth. The monument is carved from 2 pieces of basalt, the surface
is processed using the granular principle. It is a sculpture of Pepo standing
full-length. The latter is presented realistically, as a collective image of
the people. Pepo is dressed in Tiflis kinto clothes, in his right hand he holds
a barat, in his left - a hat.
Pepo's face is a vividly expressed
national type, his features remind me of Hrachya Nersisyan, who brilliantly
created the character of Pepo in Hamo Beknazaryan's film of the same name
(1935). The sculpture is characterized by the simplicity and clarity of forms,
their generalization, and the integrity of the image.
