Spring, Flowers and Celebration
Women’s Month in Armenia
Armenia is rich not only in ancient history and scenic places but also in unique traditions. One of these traditions is Women’s Month, a beautiful period in spring celebrated from March 8 to April 7. During these days, women across the country receive special attention and warmth.
If you visit Armenia during this time, you can experience a festive and warm atmosphere: many flowers are sold in the cities, events are organized, and people congratulate mothers, sisters, and friends.
March 8 — International Women’s Day
Women’s Month begins on March 8 with International Women’s Day. On this day, men and children in Armenia congratulate women by giving flowers and small gifts.
In the streets, you can see many flower stalls, and cafés and restaurants often have special offers and festive programs. The celebratory atmosphere is especially noticeable in Yerevan.
April 7 — Day of Motherhood and Beauty
Women’s Month ends on April 7 with the Day of Motherhood and Beauty. This holiday is dedicated to mothers and the beauty of women.
Many families visit parks, organize family dinners, participate in a special Divine Liturgy, or simply spend time together. The holiday is also connected to the Christian tradition and highlights the importance of motherhood in Armenian society.
The Important Role of Women in Armenian History
Historically, women in Armenia have played an important role in social and political life.
Interestingly, during the First Republic of Armenia (1918–1920), women already had the right to vote and to be elected. This was a progressive step at the time, as in many countries women were still fighting for this right.
The World’s First Woman Ambassador
A special place in Armenian history belongs to Diana Abgar. She is considered the world’s first woman ambassador.
In 1918, she was appointed Armenia’s diplomatic representative to Japan. Her work played an important role in informing the international community about Armenia and protecting the interests of the young Armenian state.
Women in Ancient Armenian Beliefs
Respect for women in Armenian culture dates back to ancient times. Before Christianity, Armenians followed pagan beliefs, where female deities held an important place.
The goddess Anahit was considered the goddess of motherhood, fertility, and wisdom. She was one of the most revered deities in the ancient Armenian pantheon.
Another important goddess was Astghik, the goddess of love and beauty. Legends about her are also connected to water and spring festivals. Some historians believe that the roots of the famous Vardavar holiday come from the worship of Astghik.
Why Visit Armenia at This Time
Spring is one of the most beautiful periods for tourism in Armenia. Besides the awakening of nature and pleasant weather, visitors can also experience the warmth and hospitality of Armenian society.
Women’s Month offers a glimpse into a facet of Armenian culture where respect, family, and tradition are highly valued. Visiting Armenia during this period means not only discovering ancient history and beautiful landscapes but also experiencing the human warmth characteristic of Armenian culture.
