PETROGLYPHS

II millennium BC

State index: 1.8.11

Pavel Safyan, the first secretary of the party committee during the early Soviet period in CPA Yerevan (Nor Nork district), moved approximately a dozen petroglyphs from the Ukhtasar ancient site in Angeghakot village, Sisian region of the ASSR, to Yerevan in the early 1970s. These petroglyphs were installed in the second district of Nor Nork, specifically in the park (now named after Tigran Mets) located east of the district administration. As of now, some of these petroglyphs are preserved, but their existence is currently under threat.

The irregular boulders display depictions of humans, animals (such as dogs, leopards, and goats with prominent horns), geometric figures (including lines, dots, squares, circles) as well as  stars and crosses. A notable portion of the petroglyphs illustrates scenes related to hunting.

The petroglyphs encapsulate valuable information about the material and spiritual life, lifestyle, beliefs, as well as the flora and fauna of the people from the ancient period. The Armenian highlands are abundant in diverse petroglyphs, consistently capturing the interest and attention of researchers.
